A Meritocratic Origin of Egalitarian Behaviour

چکیده
Abstract We report from a study of how uncertainty about whether given inequality reflects performance or luck shapes distributive behaviour. show theoretically that the reaction to depends on people trade-off probability making mistake when redistributing, and size this mistake. experimentally causes strong egalitarian pull among majority meritocratic individuals. The theoretical framework experimental results are supported in general population surveys United States Norway. Our findings suggest handle source may be great importance for understanding conflicts society.

An Analysis of Resident and Non- Resident Air Passenger Behaviour of Origin Airport Choice
Increasing number of air travellers in recent years and the emergence of multi-airport cities throughout the world has made the behaviour of travellers regarding the choice of the origin airport even more important. Analysis of this behaviour helps for a better future planning and development of competing airports as an important element of their demand prediction. In this paper, particular emp...
متن کاملMeritocratic Fairness for Cross-Population Selection
We consider the problem of selecting a pool of individuals from several populations with incomparable skills (e.g. soccer players, mathematicians, and singers) in a fair manner. The quality of an individual is defined to be their relative rank (by cumulative distribution value) within their own population, which permits cross-population comparisons. We study algorithms which attempt to select t...
متن کاملEgalitarian Computing
In this paper we explore several contexts where an adversary has an upper hand over the defender by using special hardware in an attack. These include password processing, hard-drive protection, cryptocurrency mining, resource sharing, code obfuscation, etc. We suggest memory-hard computing as a generic paradigm, where every task is amalgamated with a certain procedure requiring intensive acces...
متن کاملMeritocratic Fairness for Infinite and Contextual Bandits
We study fairness in linear bandit problems. Starting from the notion of meritocratic fairness introduced in Joseph et al. (2016), we carry out a more refined analysis of a more general problem, achieving better performance guarantees with fewer modelling assumptions on the number and structure of available choices as well as the number selected. We also analyze the previously-unstudied questio...
متن کاملEgalitarian Paxos
This paper describes the design and implementation of Egalitarian Paxos (EPaxos), a new distributed consensus algorithm based on Paxos. EPaxos achieves two goals: (1) availability without interruption as long as a simple majority of replicas are reachable—its availability is not interrupted when replicas crash or fail to respond; and (2) uniform load balancing across all replicas—no replicas ex...
